Mono Symptoms

Infectious mononucleosis is also called as kissing disease or mono and it is a glandular fever that occurs due to Epstein Barr virus. This virus belongs to the herpes virus family and due to this virus one kind of white blood cells increase compared to the other different blood components. The mono symptoms resemble symptoms of influenza and most people get this infection at some point of time in their life. In United States alone almost 95% of adults belonging to the age group of 35 to 40 years suffer from this infection.

Since mono symptoms are quite similar to influenza symptoms the infection may not be correctly diagnosed if proper medical attention is not sought. The symptoms associated with this condition include fever, aches and pains, sore and painful throat, fatigue, swelling in lymph nodes and swelling in liver as well as spleen. Like influenza the fever as well as sore throat tends to resolve within a period of 10 days on its own. Those who suffer from this infection do not get it again.

The fatigue experienced in this infection may remain for a few months after the illness. Enlargement of lymph nodes and spleen is one of the mono symptoms and this enlargement may remain for almost four weeks. Those suffering from this condition may also experience debilitating headaches. In the initial days patients often tend to experience general malaise and a lack of energy along with loss of appetite, chills and fatigue. In the initial days these symptoms can last between one to three days following which the intensity of the symptoms increases.

The most intense mono symptoms include welling in lymph nodes located in the neck area, fever as well as severe sore throat. The fever may be between 102 to 104 F and the medical care professional can notice redness in throat as well as tonsil area. The swelling in the lymph glands located in the neck area is also easily noticeable. In most cases there is a whitish coating on the tonsils along with swelling in the spleen.
